Dozens and dozens of kids and families joined us at Village Square Park on Sunday as we celebrated the re-opening of the new train play structure.

Village Square Park is located on the site of the community’s former train station. Trains rolled through Stittsville for nearly 120 years, from September 16, 1870 until January 14, 1990. The train station site was redeveloped into a public park in 1995, and the original train park was built in 1996. The Trans Canada Trail was completed in 2000.

The new park keeps the popular train theme with a new water tower and a replica VIA Rail train, plus a sand play area and landscaping. The project was funded in part by Waste Management through the Host Community Fund. A big thank you to Wayne French from Waste Management who joined us at the event.

Many people had a hand in seeing this project through to the finish line. City Parks staff included Kevin Wherry, Jennifer Shepherd, Sandra Pilgrim, Justyna Garbos, Kersten Nitsche, and Daniela Correia. Our parents advisory panel included Ashley King, Grace Barakat, Mandy Hambly, Niria Guillen, Payal Bhatia, Lea Day, and Mandy Faulkner.
