At a special meeting of the Ottawa Board of Health (BOH) on July 14, 2025, the Board approved the appointment of Dr. Trevor Arnason as the permanent Medical Officer of Health (MOH) for Ottawa Public Health (OPH). This appointment was subsequently approved by City Council, with final confirmation pending from the Ontario Ministry of Health.
Dr. Arnason has been the Interim Medical Officer of Health since February 1, 2025 and will officially begin in the role of permanent MOH on July 24, 2025. Accountable to the Ottawa Board of Health, the MOH leads OPH which is guided by its mission, vision, commitments and strategic plan.
To ensure a thorough and transparent recruitment process, the BOH appointed a selection panel composed of Board members to work closely with an executive search firm. Extensive consultations were undertaken with a wide range of OPH partners and interest holders to determine the qualities and experience needed in the next MOH. Following this comprehensive process, the selection panel concluded that Dr. Arnason was the best fit to lead OPH into the future.
Prior to taking on the role of Interim Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Arnason was appointed as the Deputy MOH in May 2024, having served as an Associate Medical Officer of Health (AMOH) since 2019. Prior to joining OPH, Dr. Arnason was the Regional MOH for Halifax, Nova Scotia and has also worked part-time in clinical practice since 2013, with a focus on prevention services for those without a primary care provider.
Dr. Arnason was born and raised in Ottawa and holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Biology and a Master of Science in Epidemiology from the University of Ottawa, where he is currently an adjunct professor in the School of Epidemiology and Public Health. After completing his Medical Doctorate at the University of Toronto in 2011, he returned to Ottawa to do residency training with dual certification in Public Health and Preventive Medicine and Family Medicine. He lives in Kitchissippi Ward close to the Ottawa River with his wife, daughter, their puppy and pet fish.

Le Conseil de santé d’Ottawa nomme un nouveau médecin chef en santé publique
Lors d’une réunion extraordinaire tenue le 14 juillet 2025, le Conseil de santé d’Ottawa a approuvé la nomination du Dr Trevor Arnason comme médecin chef en santé publique permanent de Santé publique Ottawa (SPO). Cette nomination a été approuvée par le Conseil municipal et est en attente de la confirmation du ministère de la Santé de l’Ontario.
Le Dr Arnason agit comme médecin chef en santé publique par intérim depuis le 1er février 2025 et commencera officiellement à assumer ses fonctions de médecin chef en santé publique permanent à compter du 24 juillet 2025. Rendant des comptes au Conseil de santé d’Ottawa, le médecin chef en santé publique dirige SPO conformément à la mission, à la vision, aux engagements et au Plan stratégique de l’organisme.
Pour garantir un processus de recrutement efficace et transparent, le Conseil de santé d’Ottawa a nommé un comité de sélection composé de membres du Conseil qui ont collaboré étroitement avec une agence de recherche de cadres. Le comité a mené de vastes consultations auprès d’une grande variété de partenaires et de parties intéressées de SPO pour déterminer les qualités et l’expérience que devait posséder le prochain médecin-chef en santé publique. À la suite de ce processus exhaustif, le comité de sélection en est venu à la conclusion que le Dr Arnason était la personne la plus apte à diriger SPO.
Avant d’accepter le poste de médecin en chef en santé publique par intérim, le Dr Arnason a été nommé médecin-chef adjoint en santé publique en mai 2024, lui qui était médecin adjoint en santé publique depuis 2019. Avant de se joindre à SPO, le Dr Arnason était médecin régional pour la région d’Halifax, en Nouvelle-Écosse, et a également travaillé à temps partiel dans la pratique clinique depuis 2013, avec un accent sur les services de prévention pour ceux sans fournisseur de soins primaires.
Le Dr Arnason est né et a grandi à Ottawa et est titulaire d’un baccalauréat ès sciences avec spécialisation en biologie et d’une maîtrise en épidémiologie de l’Université d’Ottawa, où il occupe actuellement un poste de professeur auxiliaire à l’École d’épidémiologie et de santé publique. Après avoir obtenu son doctorat en médecine à l’Université de Toronto en 2011, il est retourné à Ottawa pour achever son programme de résidence et obtenir une double accréditation en santé publique et en médecine préventive, ainsi qu’en médecine familiale. Il habite dans le quartier Kitchissippi, près de la rivière des Outaouais, avec sa femme, sa fille, leur chiot et leur poisson.
